~ Your small act of kindness can create big smiles!
Hong Kong currently has over 70,000 elderly residents living in care homes, accounting for about 5% among those aged 65 or above. Many of these residents face challenge such as reduced mobility, chronic illnesses, sensory impairments, frailty and dependence on assistance for daily activities like bathing, dressing and eating. Our visits aim to foster social interaction and meaningful engagement with these senior residents, bringing warmth and companionship into their lives.
Participants will help distribute knitted items collected by KnitnCare, allowing residents to choose what they like. Beyond giving gifts, your act will empower elderly residents by honoring their preferences, respecting their dignity and promoting their mental well-being.
Target Beneficiaries: Over 100 elderly residents living in care homes.
What Will You Do:
✓ Engage with elderly residents through conversation and simple activities.
✓ Distribute handmade items such as scarves, hats, stress balls, and knitted dolls to share warmth and care.
✓ Promote the well-being and dignity of elderly residents.

We are looking for students who are:
✓ Strong in leadership and facilitation
✓ Empathetic and caring
✓ Responsible and punctual
✓ Proactive and communicative
✓ Interested in knitting and committed to collaborating with CEDARS to develop these visits into a long-term “Knit and Care Project” (priority will be given to these students)
Quota: 6 volunteers per session
(Language mix: at least 50% Cantonese speakers, and no more than 50% Putonghua / English speakers)
Notes for Participants:
- Visits will primarily be conducted in Cantonese. Non-Cantonese speakers are welcome, and volunteers from the community partner and Serve 2Gather Cantonese-speaking students will try to provide necessary support and facilitation.
- The last hour of each visit will be dedicated to sharing kindness beyond the elderly homes by distributing caring items to scavengers and cleaning workers in the nearby communities.
Quota is full. Successful applicants will be notified by CEDARS via email in due course.

Participants who meet the service hours and attendance requirements will receive:
• An e-Certificate of Participation by CEDARS after completing 20 hours of Serve 2Gather activities

Community Partner
KnitnCare is a community organisation dedicated to spreading warmth and comfort through handmade knitted items and meaningful companionship. The group collects handcrafted scarves, beanies, knitted stress balls, and hand-knit dolls from knitting enthusiasts and organises regular visits to elderly care homes. More than simply distributing these items, KnitnCare empowers elderly home residents by allowing them to choose what they want—honoring their freedom of choice, respect, and dignity. Each visit places strong emphasis on heartfelt communication and genuine interaction, creating moments of joy and connection for the elderly.
